About Us Who we are

OrgaBIT...

is an independent and privatly held company, established in Year 2005. Among other endeavours, we are specialized in application software and data migration from previously proprietary computer and operating systems to the open source world, i.e. Unix, Linux and Windows server systems. OrgaBIT is owned by Dipl. Ing. (FH) Andreas Maier, who - along with partners and freelancers - is involved in designing and developing tools to make software and data migration as easy as possible.

Dipl. Ing. (FH) Andreas Maier...

after successfully finishing his studies of telecommunication techniques at the "Fachhochschule für Technik Esslingen" started his career at Hewlett-Packard GmbH (HP) in Böblingen / Germany where he worked for 15 years until 1995 in various jobs and responsibilities.

Starting with Hewlett-Packard Germany...

After working for 3 years as a project manager in a software development department where he was responsible for research and development of CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) software, Mr. Maier was asked in 1986 to move to the HP German Sales Marketing to play a leading role in introducing the brand new HP9000/HP-UX RISC server family to the German market. Having gathered a lot of knowledge and skills in real time processing and the HP9000/HP-UX servers it was a logical step for Mr. Maier to be part of the "German Knowledge Center", responsible for server benchmarking and technology transition from the HP US labs to Germany. In 1989, when the German Knowledge Center and HP's German Support Organization where merged to the Professional Services Organization (PSO / HP's consulting operation) Mr. Maier was appointed project manager. He was then responsible for the midrange migration business in Germany and parts of Europe in the "Open Systems Migration Center". He was asked to run a small group of software engineers, to research and develop software migration tools to make software and data migrations from proprietary midrange computer platforms to the HP9000/HP-UX RISC servers as easy as possible. As the manager of a profit center Mr. Maier had to sell, plan and manage customer projects. With his team he developed tools applicable to the following computer / operating systems:

  • HP1000 - RTE
  • Nixdorf 8870/Quattro - NIROS
  • Digital Equipment (DEC) - VMS
  • IBM /36, /38, AS400
  • Philips P4000 - DINOS
  • Prime - PRIMOS
  • Kienzle 9000 - MTOS
  • others (Wang, MAI, Bull)

Whenever possible, Mr. Maier recruited HP partners - then using OEMed migration tools in projects.

... to the responsibilities of an IT Manager ...

In 1995, Mr. Maier accepted the challenge to work with one of his former clients as an IT manager, responsible for the continuous operation of their IT data center (24/7) and the strategic development of IT operations. His major efforts included:

  • Planning and managing the installation of a companywide local area Ethernet network (UTP5, switches, hubs). Installing and configuring a network management system based on HP OpenView for the 170 PCs/Macs and the server farm consisting of some Novell/NetWare servers, Windows servers, HP9000/HP-UX servers und Linux servers.
  • Introducing a standard office automation environment based on Microsoft-Office and Novell GroupWise including the fax server system Tobit FaxWare.
  • Planning, managing and introducing a completely integrated brand new client/server based ERP system (designed for printing shops) including the operational modules financial, costs, asset and payroll accounting including time recording and the ERP modules materials management, warehouse control, purchasing, sales, order management, production planning including electronic control station, dispatching, invoicing, production data acquisition and last but not least trading. Connecting several customers via EDI to transfer and manage orders.
  • Installing, configuring and managing the relational database system Informix Dynamic Server which is used as data management system for the ERP system.
  • Connecting the enterpise to the Internet, installing and configuring a Firewall based on Linux, an Apache Web-Server and a remote access solution (VPN tunneling, IPSec and SSL).
  • Installing and configuring Linux based enterprise wide file and print servers using Samba services.

... finally ending up as an entrepreneur

After beeing an IT manager for 10 years, Mr. Maier decided to take the next step in his career by establishing OrgaBIT. All the skills and knowledge he has gathered in over 25 years of working in IT related jobs are now available to help customers migrate applications, and build, plan and manage complex IT infrastructures.
